When my client first told me about her favorite painting, La Jeune Martyre by Paul Delaroche, I knew we had the perfect starting point for her office. She had fallen in love with its moody, ethereal quality during her visit to the Louvre—and she wanted her workspace to feel just as

layered, poetic, and moody. The result? Custom built-ins that aren’t just storage; they are a curated backdrop for creativity and calm.

Finding Inspiration in Art and Story

Designing a space that truly feels personal starts with listening. My client wanted her office to reflect not only the painting she loved but also her own story. That meant blending dramatic, romantic tones with warmth and a sense of lived-in comfort. La Jeune Martyre became our guide: its deep shadows, soft light, and subtle details shaped everything from color palette to material choices.

Layering Color, Texture, and Light

We began with deep blue shelves—a dramatic canvas reminiscent of the painting’s atmospheric background. Against that richness, ivory ceramics and soft white objects bring in light and contrast, preventing the space from feeling heavy. Brass accents echo the painting’s glowing halo, while darker glass vessels add depth. Stone and wood elements anchor the design, introducing tactile warmth.

Plants became an essential part of the composition. Their natural forms soften the built-ins and breathe life into every shelf, just as delicate figures bring life to the canvas. The final effect is calm, slightly dramatic, and entirely personal—a space that invites you to linger.

Actionable Steps to Achieve the Look

If you want to bring this moody, ethereal energy into your own office or built-ins, here’s how to start:

  1. Choose a dramatic backdrop color – Deep blues, charcoal grays, or rich greens provide a sophisticated canvas.

  2. Layer light and dark objects – Mix light ceramics or glass with darker vessels to create contrast and depth.

  3. Add warm metallic accents – Brass, gold, or bronze bring a subtle glow and elevate the overall feel.

  4. Incorporate natural textures – Wood, stone, and woven pieces keep the space grounded and approachable.

  5. Include living greenery – Plants break up rigid lines and add life, movement, and softness.

  6. Curate thoughtfully – Let each object tell a story or hold meaning; avoid overcrowding.

The Result

The finished built-ins feel like a living painting—dramatic yet calm, romantic yet approachable. Each element interacts with light and shadow, echoing the inspiration while honoring the client’s story. Walking into the office is now like stepping into a personal gallery, a space designed to inspire creativity and reflection every day.

Your home should feel like a story you love. I’d love to help you tell it—reach out and let’s get started.
